About Charleston Residents Directory

Charleston has no single public book that names every resident. Useful evidence is split among the Kanawha County Assessor, County Clerk, voter office, courts, Charleston City Clerk, Kanawha County Public Library, and WV Archives. This private reference organizes those official routes so a name, street, parcel, or old address can lead to the right custodian without implying that any one roll proves current residence.

Why This Site Exists

Charleston's resident evidence was never kept in one place. Ownership appears in Kanawha County assessor and deed records. Voter information is governed by West Virginia law. Historical volumes are held by KCPL, WV Archives, and WVU. We bring the official tools, office contacts, coverage dates, and access limits together while keeping each record in the context of its true custodian.

What You Will Find Here

  • Pages by angle: the street directory (address-keyed records), the city directory (the historical shelf), and the resident lookup (one-person searches)
  • The rolls and offices: assessor, recorder, elections office, court clerk, vital records, the library's local history collection
  • Walkthroughs: how to trace who lives on a street, how to read a directory entry, how to follow a household across the decades
  • Access rules: what West Virginia law opens, what stays closed, and how a records request works when something is not online

What We Cannot Do

This is a privately run reference site with no connection to any Charleston office, Kanawha County department, West Virginia agency, court, or library. Important limits apply:

  • We cannot confirm whether a specific person currently lives in Charleston
  • We cannot pull, certify, or change any record on your behalf
  • We cannot add anyone to, or remove anyone from, any roll or database
  • We cannot give legal advice about a record or a dispute
  • We cannot promise that every coverage year, link, or office detail here is current at this moment

Only the custodian office can confirm, certify, or correct a record. Nothing found through this site may be used for credit, employment, tenant, or insurance decisions.
